Ironically, there seems to be a great deal to write about when the lack of time becomes the driving force. Yet, there are elderly writers, both published and unpublished, who announce that they are retiring from the effort. My guess is that often the decision is an unfortunate reaction to a bad day, or month, or even years. If writing is in your blood, I believe only a true physical limitation will keep you from eventually returning to it, or even starting.
I’m seventy. I’ve had a little luck with publishing and a lot of dreams. Now, however, I know that, while I may not be able to write stories that include the youth of today and all their many new words, super stars, and electronics, I am able to piece together endless stories about events of the past seven decades that changed lives. With so much material, the question becomes which story deserves the effort as time is limited. Time is now the driving force behind my writing.
So, I try to choose wisely.
These next few blogs will address some of the issues the elderly face when they are writing. I will try to be honest and not mince words. I will also talk to/interview others in my age group to provide different points of view. If you would like to send me your views on writing as time runs out, please send in the comments section of this blog.
