Asperger’s Does Not Create Racism

This past week I attended a wonderful book club meeting in Nashville to discuss ‘Small Moments.’ There were several comments that gave me plenty to think about on my drive back home. One in particular gave credence to the idea that my father may have had some degree of Asperger’s. If this is indeed true, it would explain why he was so relentlessly repetitive about his dislikes and why he didn’t stay to help in the chapter titled ‘Turning Point.’ It would, in fact, explain a lot.

Regardless, the comment made me realize that there was something about him that renders a great deal of his behavior forgivable. He was an unhappy man and may have had some sort of social or developmental challenge. If I can believe this, it is easier to ‘forgive’ or simply let go of many bad thoughts about him. It does not, however, erase the harmfulness of his views.
