Classes. This is probably a tool I should have mentioned to start. Taking classes on writing memoir can be enormously helpful to you and to your writer’s group. Don’t let age stand in your way. Sure, it can be a little awkward to be the oldest student in a class
and even older than the professor, but it is worth the effort. You will be challenged by younger ideas and perspective and your own perspective will be of interest.
There are numerous courses online. I would select from well-known universities that offer classes that can be put towards a degree if you later decide to pursue one. This will leave the option open and will pretty much guarantee that the professors will be
knowledgeable.
The most obvious advantages to taking a memoir writing class are numerous. I particularly appreciated the reading lists, the deadlines for submitting work, and the protocols of feedback. All three are helpful and provide solid information you can share with other memoir writers.
- The reading lists. Here are two to get started:
‘The Art of Memoir’ by Mary Karr
‘Writing About Your Life: A Journey into the Past’ by William Zinsser - Deadlines. Taking a class enhances this practice that can be reinforced by having deadlines for writer’s groups.
- Feedback. Once you learn how to give constructive feedback, you are better able to look objectively at your own work.
In my next few blogs I will review what constructive feedback entails and I will introducea new method being used in current writing classes.
In the meantime, don’t hesitate to join a memoir writing class or start a degree. Use all tools available to enhance your work and bring whatever you learn to your writer’s group.
Everyone will appreciate new ideas.
Take care and send me your thoughts
Mary
